The Power of Push-in Speech Therapy

Think of Push-in Speech Therapy as bringing speech therapy right into a student’s classroom instead of taking them to a separate therapy room. Sometimes the speech therapist might work with students in a corner of the classroom to practice their specific speech and language goals. In an ideal world, they team up with the classroom teacher – it’s pretty cool actually! They work together to weave speech and language support right into curriculum, which helps not just students with IEPs but can benefit the whole class too. It’s like having two teachers in one room, each bringing their own expertise to help kids learn and communicate better.

In what types of classrooms can you provide Push-in Speech Therapy?
Throughout my 30-year career as a Preschool Speech Language Pathologist, I provided push-in therapy in the following environments:
- Self-contained classrooms in which students had profound disabilities.
- Self-contained classrooms in which students had a range of disabilities and levels of performance.
- Reverse mainstreamed classes in which up to half of the students were typical peers.
- Full inclusion classrooms with a regular education teacher in which less than half of the students had disabilities.

I love working directly in the classroom because...
- It provides lots of opportunities for my students to generalize their skills.
- I'm able to observe my students in a natural environment.
- I see how my students interact with their peers.
- It allows me to collaborate with the teacher on possible curriculum topics.
- I'm able to model therapy techniques for the teacher to implement when I'm not there.
